I’d like to welcome all of our graduates, staff, families, and special guests to our Senior awards dinner. For years, you have worked so hard towards this day, and as a school community, we are proud to celebrate your accomplishments with you tonight.
In such a short period of time, we have worked together to build a charter school community that puts teaching and learning first. This high school challenged you to be the next great leaders in our state and in the nation, and you accepted the challenge. We couldn’t be more proud of the path you are on, and we wish you continued success. I know that you will continue to make us proud in all that you do in the future.
Mr. Frank Scandale
An investigative editor and a watchdog strategist for the Journal News, a property of the Gannett Corp company,
Former Editor of The Record of Bergen County, former Assistant Manager of The Denver Post Former VP of Production for Digital First Media.
He wanted to be a novelist until he answered an ad for “writer’s wanted” at The Daily Journal in Elizabeth, N.J. He accepted a $10,000-a-year job offer and got, as a colleague told him, “a front-row ticket to life.”
Frank became the editor of The Record in January 2001. Under his guidance, the paper has earned The New Jersey Press Association’s General Excellence Award for best newspaper in the state, 7 of the last 9 years
He led The Record’s award-winning coverage of the September 11 attacks, which included the photo by Thomas Franklin of firemen raising the flag in front of the World Trade Center rubble.
Mr. Scandale came to The Record from The Denver Post, where he served as assistant managing editor for news. He was previously the city editor for Daily Journal in Elizabeth, NJ and also held editorial positions at Reuters News.
Mr. Tony Dovlani
Tony Dovolani is balancing fitness, dance and family while capturing the hearts of millions each season on Dancing with the Stars. Born in Prishtina, Kosova, Tony was proficient in Albanian folk dancing by age three and was inspired by watching Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly films. After immigrating to the United States as a political refugee from his native Kosovo, Tony trained at a Connecticut Fred Astaire dance studio and eventually became one of the most dominant competitive dancers in the country. A two-time dance champion and certified world judge, Tony brought his expertise to Hollywood when he coached Jennifer Lopez and Richard Gere for the 2004 film Shall We Dance, in which he also had a small role.
He then joined Dancing with the Stars for its second season and captured our attention with partner Stacy Keibler, when the two placed third in the finals. During the Dancing with the Stars: All-Star Season, season 15, Tony and dance partner Melissa Rycroft won the show and took home the Mirrorball Trophy. Tony co-founded Dance With Me USA Dance Studios in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut.
Mr. Andre Sayegh
Andre Sayegh is a Councilman in the City of Paterson. As a lifelong Patersonian, Andre has been successful in bringing together diverse communities to advance an agenda to improve their quality of life. This includes closing notorious nightclubs, securing funding to help establish Special Improvement Districts, championing legislation that would designate Paterson an “Economic Growth Zone” and catalyzing an initiative to generate revenue for the cash-strapped city by increasing Paterson’s recycling rate.
After graduating from Seton Hall University with the highest honors in 1997 and earning his Master’s Degree in Public Policy and Administration from Columbia University in 2000, Andre kicked off his political career as a legislative aide to Congressman Bill Pascrell for four years.
Additionally, his experience as Chief of Staff for Senator John A. Girgenti (2005-2007) provided him with exposure to the inner workings of Trenton.
Andre was elected to two terms to the Paterson Board of Education where he served as President from 2007-2008. Some of his accomplishments include helping to revamp the curriculum, implementing a school uniform policy, and relocating the district’s central office to save money for the school system.
In 2008, Andre was elected to the Paterson City Council to represent the Paterson’s Sixth Ward. In 2012, he was re-elected by garnering nearly 70% of the vote in a three-way race and was subsequently, elected President of the City Council in 2013.
